Overview of Egypt's History
The history of Egypt began in 5500 BC when its earliest settlers arrived. After making Egypt their home, the settlers began creating dynasties. The people of Egypt continuously had to fight for and defend their land from outsiders because of the ideal location of Egypt. It is surrounded by mountains to keep invaders out while one side of it has the Nile River which was, and still is, used for transporting goods and people. After the height of Egyptian power Britain invaded and took over Egypt in 1914. Only eight years later, in 1922, the Egyptians gained back their independence from Britain. This triumph led to the formation of the Arab League in 1945. After the Arab League is formed many countries continue to invade Egypt for the land and natural resources that are found here. The fighting leads to the Six Day War which occurred in 1967. Egypt is defeated by Israel; the Egyptians lose the Sinai Peninsula which is now occupied by Israel. In 1971, a couple years after the Six Day War Egypt realizes that it is time for change; the first Egyptian constitution was signed. For a few decades after the signing of the constitution the Egyptian people are content. However, slowly both men and women are losing their rights. In 2010 the anti Mubarak protests begin. The Egyptian's are unhappy with him and in 2011 Mubarak resigns as the country's president. As the country sees new leadership they also begin to see new rights, in 2012 the first free election occurs.
