Question:
After considering both sources and your knowledge of plant and animal biodiversity, how are the issues of biodiversity related to the idea of threats to cultural diversity. Do you believe that governments should be actively involved (through legislation and funding) in protecting cultural diversity?
Answer:
The global issues of biodiversity directly threaten the population’s cultural diversity. The definition of biodiversity is, the variety of life through plants, animals, genes, and ecosystems. Every place in the world is biologically diverse. From the type of ecosystem of that region to the plants and animals that reside there, no place is exactly the same. One way that biodiversity is threatening cultural diversity is through landscape. People are deforesting large portions of indigenous people’s homes. According to Wade Davis, a renowned anthropologist and ethnobotanist, these people live off of the Earth, they believe that the Earth itself exists because we do. The flora and fauna in each region is unique to the region’s ecosystem. Plants are used for medicines, rituals, and in religious practices and animals are eaten. With global deforestation people are unable to utilize these natural resources and their culture becomes endangered.
I believe that governments should be involved in protecting our world’s biodiversity and cultural diversity. Through government regulations laws can be put into place. Acts and legislation can be voted on and passed. The government would be able to enforce all of the rules and regulations so that the biodiversity could be preserved. Without plants and animals humans would not be able to sustain life. We need plants to breathe and eat and we need animals to eat and keep the ecosystem in order. With the dedication of all governments and peoples around the world we would be able to work together to preserve our Earth’s plants, animals, genes, and ecosystems. Through government regulations and acts we may be able to completely turn the threats on biodiversity and cultural diversity around.
Some people may believe that governments should not be involved in the preservation of biodiversity and cultural diversity. Some people may see no harm in losing the languages that are not considered globally spoken. Degrading another culture is unjust. As Wade Davis said, 6,000 languages used to be spoken, now less than half are present and being taught to children. Also, some may believe that the government should not become involved because they are the source of the corruption and the problem behind threats of biodiversity. Well, with legislation and regulations the government can help preserve the biodiversity and the cultural diversity that is dwindling. In the past governments have not done much to preserve the cultural and biodiversity, but in recent years they are beginning to see what a large impact these losses have on our world.
